Wegmans Launches Luxury Japanese Restaurant Within NYC Store
- Aug 8, 2025
When Wegmans inaugurated their first New York City establishment in 2023, fans braved the early morning hours to explore the store. Already beloved for its affordable prices, top-notch prepared foods, and exceptional customer service, population of Wegmans' 112 locations along the Eastern seaboard had ample reasons to love this grocery chain. Now, Wegmans has given its loyal supporters even more to get excited about: a posh Japanese restaurant.
Known as Next Door, this dining establishment nestled within Wegmans' Astor Place location, takes inspiration from its Rochester-based namesake. The culinary team, led by chefs Kazuya Matsuoka, Oliver Lange, and John Emerson, have blended signature favorites with fresh creations. Matsuoka efficiently sums it up, “You’ll see many favorites from Rochester on our Astor Place menu, alongside many new dishes that we’re excited about.”
Challenging preconceived views of a typical grocery store eatery, Next Door exudes opulence. Its design is awe-inspiring, showcasing golden tones, a marble sushi bar, and custom mosaics, plus velvet seating. Champagne, tableside service, and caviar add to the luxurious vibe. Though the core focus of the menu is artfully crafted sushi.
Wegmans' reputation for a superior sushi bar and seafood counter precedes the restaurant, with food sourced directly from Tokyo's renowned Toyosu Fish Market, the world's largest. Emphasizing the benefit of these connections, Oliver declared: “We have the advantage of Wegmans’ longstanding supplier relationships - for instance, direct access to the Toyosu Fish Market - allowing us to source some of the freshest and highest quality ingredients available…At Next Door, we bring the same commitment to ingredient quality that has always been at the heart of Wegmans.”
Yet, premium comes at a price. Nine pieces of chef’s selection nigiri at the lavish restaurant cost a steep $72, compared to a similar set at Wegmans market sushi bar for $16. Though pricier, the experience could be worth it considering the quality of the food and presentation.
Next Door’s menu isn’t just about sushi, though. It also offers ribeye, Tokyo-style tenderloin, and A5 Japanese wagyu cooked on a robata grill, alongside affordable vegetable options. Among these, the standout is a baked sweet potato, mashed with black garlic ponzu butter and served alongside crispy chips.
Other than the pricey menu, its stately ambiance designates it as a special occasion venue. Nonetheless, Wegmans team anticipates that their Astor Place’s Next Door will gain popularity as a local favorite. If you have plans to dine at Next Door, it's recommended to secure a reservation to guarantee a spot, considering the restaurant’s novelty and the enthusiastic fanbase of Wegmans.
