A new study recently issued by financial platform Coventry Direct has unveiled which classic diner is favored by America. In the hot seat for the most searched diner chain throughout the past year is none other than the internationally renowned IHOP. Known for their endless amounts of pancakes, omelets, crepes, and even burgers, this dining giant proved to be the country's preferred location for those golden pancakes and comfort food.

The diverse array following IHOP was a mix of national mainstays and recognized regional diners. This offers us an insight into the different preferences Americans have when they decide to swing by a diner for a hearty breakfast or brunch. According to Coventry Direct, all these names have a unifying factor - they are as quintessentially American as an apple pie straight from a diner kitchen. No matter if you're entering a 24/7 chain or a local gem, you're comforted by the familiar sight of eggs cooking on the grill, a generously heaped serving plate of hash browns, and the distinct scent of freshly brewed coffee. While it may not have the sophistication of the latest oat milk latte sensation, it spells out 'home' for many.

In its quest to determine the country’s favorite diner chains, Coventry Direct analyzed Google Trends data from all 50 states. The team started off with a list of the top 30 beloved diner dishes (like “grilled cheese” and “waffles”) and the top 10 diner brands, tracking the search engine data from the last year. All of this information was sorted by search popularity and divided by state, unveiling where and what on the menu Americans are most curious about.

Coming out on top is the California-rooted IHOP, taking the title as America’s most searched diner chain. With close to 2000 outlets nationwide, the pancake titan holds the lion’s share in breakfast topic debates online and likely over Sunday morning discussions at homes across America.

Part of its success could be attributed to its commitment to affordability, particularly at a time when inflation seems to be dictating dining choices. IHOP stands firm with budget-friendly specials like its $7 “Happy Plate” that comes with a serving of pancakes, eggs, and hash browns, $6 value menus, and “Break Feasts”-nostalgic, pocket-friendly breakfasts that always seem to hit the right spot.

While other nationwide staples like Denny’s and Waffle House were placed slightly lower, these names are still firm favorites across Western and Southern regions, evidence that diner classics continue to be irresistible despite financial strains.

The data also pointed out a clear divergence between the national and local favorites. Almost half of the top-searched chains are regional brands including Massachusetts-based Friendly’s, and First Watch, a breakfast chain that’s rapidly gaining popularity in the Midwest. First Watch even secured the No. 2 spot, overtaking both Denny’s and Waffle House. This implies that Americans are showing an inclination towards a more fresh and modern spin on diner classics, while still yearning for the familiar atmospheric comfort.

What’s a diner visit without an occasional treat? Accordingly, Coventry Direct identified the most searched menu items state by state. Across nine states, particularly in the South and Midwest, milkshakes reigned supreme. French toast and grilled cheese shared the title for the second most popular diner dishes nationwide, followed by root beer floats, waffles, and omelets-each a nostalgic serving of American culture.
