Step aside, Shandy. We're exploring the Radler, a delectably effervescent beer cocktail that offers the perfect blend of light lager and sparkling lemonade. Unlike the Shandy, which arrived in the 1850s, the Radler has a more recent origin story dating back to early 20th century Bavaria. The two might be interchanged commonly, but they originated around seven decades apart and have unique identities.

The original Shandy, initially known as a Shandygaff, was a mix of beer and ginger ale or ginger beer. As the century closed, "gaff" was removed from its name and lemonade replaced ginger as the mixer of choice. This takes us to the 1920s, where the Radler made its first appearance, owing its creation to the practical thinking of a Bavarian beer garden owner, Franz Xaver Kugler.

As the popular tale goes, Kugler encountered an unexpected wave of cyclists at his beer garden on a trail outside Munich in 1922. Faced with a dwindling beer supply, he ingeniously stretched his remaining lager with citrus juice, creating a thirst-quenching drink he christened Radlermass – with 'Radler' meaning 'cyclist' in German, and 'mass' referring to a one-liter beer mug. The Radler, as it was eventually abbreviated to, was an instant hit.

What makes the Radler so enjoyable? It's all down to its elements. Light lagers, with their vivid carbonation and crisp taste, are a joy in warm weather. Pair them with citrus and you've got a winning combination that accentuates the floral aromatics of the beer while giving added effervescence. Mixing equal parts of a light lager and sparkling lemonade results in a cocktail with a pop of citrus, a hint of sweetness, and a dry, crisp finish that beautifully counters the sweet and fizzy lemonade. Then there's the bonus of a lower alcohol content, which ensures that the Radler remains a light, refreshing, and easy-to-savor concoction.

To make your own Radler, all you'll need is 8 ounces of a light lager and 8 ounces of sparkling lemonade. Pour both into a pint glass, give it a quick stir, and voila-your own Radler. Light, refreshing, and perfect for a summer day.
